After researching BlackStar's environmental impact we have come to this conclusion:

The best thing you can do for the planet is to waste as little as possible, and make good use of the waste that we do have. We have made waste reduction BlackStar's primary sustainability goal. We are nowhere near where we need to be, but every day we work to waste less and less.

Eliminating unnecessary waste from our homes and workplaces can make the biggest difference to our carbon footprints. Recycling, wind farms and electric cars may be sexier and capture public attention – but if you really want to shrink your carbon footprint, waste less.

For hospitality businesses like ours, the most potent waste (that has the biggest carbon footprint) is food waste. Both plant and animal products take lots of resources to create and transport. Secondly, food waste that ends up in landfill creates methane, which is 21 times more damaging to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. In a nutshell, when food is bagged up and deprived of oxygen – as it is in landfill – it cannot form CO2. It rots slowly over years instead of weeks and gradually leaches methane into the atmosphere.

While eliminating food waste entirely is our ultimate goal, BlackStar has subscribed to a service with Veolia which takes food waste to a company called EARTHPOWER which turns it into electricity through their anaerobic digestion technology
